la tejana

6 GUESties rose bright ’n early this Sunday for breakfast tacos, horchata, and a special Q&A with the owners of La Tejana in Mt. Pleasant. This Rio Grande Valley-inspired gem has earned a coveted spot in the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand section, and on a normal day, you can find lines out their door until closing (or till they sell out).

The owner, Ana-Maria, told us that you can judge a breakfast taco place by their frijolito — refried bean and cheese taco. Despite being the most simple item on the menu, it was obvious that they have their flavors down to a tee. The tortillas themselves are the most memorable part of the experience — hand made and sturdy.

Ana-Maria said she loves having students come, and that they give a student discount on everything! They have also opened an upstairs area where you can eat and study on the weekdays, when it’s not as busy.

GUES recommends:

  • El frijolito

  • La Betsy (vegan taco!)
